The next AFI Dallas International Film Festival is officially on the calendar, running from March 26 - April 5, 2009. More importantly for any filmmakers who happen to be reading this missive (cue cricket audio), the AFI folks have just put out their call for entries.

By submitting your film by Oct. 17, 2008, you can get in on the early-deadline lower fees. (Details here)

Categories for entries include the competitive (and potentially lucrative, with prizes of thousands of dollars at stake) Target Narrative Feature, Target Documentary Feature, MPS Studios Texas Competition and Current Energy Earth Friendly Environmental Visions awards.

Additional categories for submissions are World Cinema (featuring diverse cinematic voices from around the world), Dallas Premiere Series (featuring the best new films on the horizon making their debut on Dallas screens), Deep Ellum Sounds (a category which honors the rich music culture of Dallas’ historic Deep Ellum neighborhood by showcasing music narratives and documentaries), Mavericks (which highlights noted auteurs and unique cinematic voices), Family Friendly (which features dynamic and adventurous films uniquely suited for family viewing), American Visions (featuring films that demonstrate the landscape of creative film exploration and examination from and about our country), and Midnight Specials (featuring on-the-edge films that relish both the genre and outré filmmaking worlds).

Not yet ready for prime time? Not to worry, you can still submit your film to the 2009 festival board through Nov. 21, 2008 (which date constitutes the regular deadline) or by Dec. 5, 2009 - the late submission deadline, which means you'll have to pay a premium, but - oh well - at least your creative brainchild will still receive consideration for inclusion in the festival.

Good luck! Maybe we'll see you on the red carpet next year.

Redefining the Disfranchised: The Political Art of Nina Allender As we continue to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote, there's a prime opportunity to view influential art from the era. Nina Evans Allender drew political cartoons for The Suffragist from 1914 into the 1920s, transforming stereotypical views of who a suffragist was. Over the years, Allender contributed more than 250 political cartoons to the movement, a number of which are on display at the Women's Museum at Fair Park. More info
