Diversity, thy city is Dallas. This week is full of a variety of events to keep you anything but bored.
Hooray for Volley, Wood: All Sports Mixer
Tonight, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
It’s a battle of the acronyms as DIVA (Dallas Independent Volleyball Association) faces off against the NTGLBTCC (North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce) in a mixer to the death! OK, so it’s not quite that dramatic, but join us at Woody’s as these two organizations co-sponsor a Happy Hour Networking Mixer to meet other people and learn more about how to execute the perfect volleyball spike.
Free admission with drink specials; Woody’s Sports Bar; www.divadallas.org; www.glbtchamber.org
Hops to it: Deschutes Brewery Beer Dinner
Tonight, 7:00 p.m.
Leave the stuffy old wine tasting dinners to the people in the Grey Poupon commercials. We want some beer! But don’t worry, this isn’t just a can of any old ale from the convenience store. The founder of the Deschutes Brewery, Gary Fish, will be on hand to give insight into each brew. A delicious four-course dinner will complement the handcrafted brews for a delightfully different way to spend your Thursday night. Check out the menu and more online.
$40 per person; Victory Tavern; (214) 432-1900 for reservations; www.victorytavern.com
Spare Us: Project Fruit Bowl 2008
Sunday, July 27, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a Hot Tranny Mess, even if just for a day, then Project Fruit Bowl is your chance to show what you got. But instead of a runway, it’s a bowling alley. This year’s fashion theme means the outrageous costumes (matched to bowling shoes, of course) will be crazier than ever. Get a team together (quickly!) and sign up for the action and fun. Prizes awarded to best costume, best bowler and worst bowler. Proceeds benefit the HRC’s Coming Out Project.
Tickets: $30 per individual, $120 per team of 4; USA Bowl; www.hrc.org/fruitbowl
Sisterhood of the Traveling U-Haul: Dallas Lesbian Festival
Saturday, July 26, 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Hallelujah! It’s raining (wo)men! Or is that womyn? However you spell it, Saturday’s all about our lesbian sisters. There will be food, drinks and plenty of live music in this pet-friendly outdoor celebration featuring a performance by Sarah Bettens (pictured). A limited number of presale tickets are available at Sue Ellen’s, so catch ‘em if you can.
$10 presale, $15 at the gate; Parking Lot Behind Sue Ellen’s; www.partyattheblock.com
Hell on the Red: Kathy Griffin
Saturday, July 26, 8:00 p.m.
Non-stop trash-talking by one of our favorite sassmeisters? We’re so there. Front row. Back stage. Stalking the stage door afterward. Hiding under her hotel bed. Pumicing the corns on her feet. Waxing her left boob…
Tickets: $45 - $65; NOKIA Theatre at Grand Prairie; www.nokialivedfw.com

Redefining the Disfranchised: The Political Art of Nina Allender As we continue to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote, there's a prime opportunity to view influential art from the era. Nina Evans Allender drew political cartoons for The Suffragist from 1914 into the 1920s, transforming stereotypical views of who a suffragist was. Over the years, Allender contributed more than 250 political cartoons to the movement, a number of which are on display at the Women's Museum at Fair Park. More info
