NorthPark Center ejects Dallas media from mall after shooting on Friday

— Channel 5 reporter Scott Gordon offers an alarming behind-the-scenes account of his efforts to report on the shooting that took place at NorthPark Center Friday night when someone tried to carjack a woman's truck and shot her in the face.

According to Gordon, mall management and security guards kicked him and his peers off the property under the rationale that shopping malls are private property.

He points out that the mall welcomes the press when it comes to promotions and holiday events but is not interested in allowing the press to cover a story about crime there.

Merritt Patterson of Park Cities People reports on being at the mall when the accident happened.

Damn. Shot in the face, but could still make it to the valet stand? Does that mean she's still alive? I sincerely hope so, because that's one incredible woman.

Its a tough call on this. one side is the fact theres a public safety issue angle that needs to be covered (i.e. alerting the public to users name, description, whereabouts, ect.) On the other hand, this happened right on the corner of Lilly White Lane/Crackerville Road, which sends a bad message that the mall is being infiltrated by the "bad element"(i.e. not from the park cities) that they've been so far doing a decent job of keeping out(see: holding hispanic teens in custody spring 2008).

The real issue is that Northpark doesnt want another blackeye with their inept security force. They've been terrible at doing their job and even worse at trying to play police.
